FreedomBooks

Privacy and your data

Your books are on your computer. We don't run a server that holds them, and you don't need an account with us to use FreedomBooks.

Where your books live

Each company is one file on your own computer, encrypted with SQLCipher. You can do all of your bookkeeping with the internet unplugged. Copy the file somewhere safe, or make an encrypted backup from inside FreedomBooks, the same as you would with any file you can't afford to lose.

When something goes over the internet

Only the optional plugins connect to outside services, and only after you turn them on.

Bank feeds talk to SimpleFIN with your SimpleFIN account. Invoice email goes out through your Gmail, Microsoft 365 or SMTP account.

You connect your own ChatGPT account through OpenAI's official Sign in with ChatGPT page. Only what a task needs goes to OpenAI. You check the results, and nothing posts to your books on its own. The ChatGPT page explains the connection and the matching and job-expense features coming next.

Each of those services has its own privacy terms, and those apply when you use it.

You can check our work

FreedomBooks is open source and the code is on GitHub, so you, or someone you trust with this kind of thing, can read exactly how it handles your data.

This site sets no cookies and has no analytics or tracking scripts. It uses your computer's own fonts and loads every file from this site, so opening a page doesn't tell any other company you were here.
